Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident rendered him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
